Give the Gift of a Flag
We were surprised and delighted to discover that many people wanted to give Flags 2021 as a Christmas gift to their family, friends, or neighbours this year.  As a result we had some beautiful gift cards made that come with envelopes.  If you would like to give a flag as a gift, either for Christmas or another occasion, simply register here in your own name but use your gift recipient's address instead of your own address.  To get a gift card please drop in to Lorac Management, opposite the Memorial Centre, to pick it up. They're free!!
A letter of thanks
We just received a lovely letter of thanks from one of our scholarship recipients, Olivia.

The Flags Were Flying
Well, this is just a sample of some of the flags that we had flying around town this past season. It is almost mesmerizing, and definitely makes you proud, as you take a look at all of the homes that participated. I can't wait to see how many more people sign up for next year, and how many give the flag program as a gift, now that we have gift certificates available.

Rock & Roll Forever! As Lip Sync Battle A Huge Success
Posted on Nov 12, 2019

Written by Russell Skeet

High River's Dance Tech Kicked off the evening with a great rendition of the Grease Mega-Mix.

A whole lot of fun Saturday, November 9 at the Highwood Memorial Centre for first annual Rotary Club Lip Sync Battle.

Nanton's David Gale and Amanda Bustard were the big winners with their version of the Sloan classic "Money City Maniacs."

They won a thousand dollars, and another thousand to donate, and Gale says that money will stay right here in the Foothills.

"So, we're going to give that actually to the Lions Club. We just moved to the Foothills area, so we decided to give it to the Lions Club, because they really stand for what we stand for, which is giving back to the community."

rotary lip sync battle nov9 2019 005Nanton's David Gale and Amanda Bustard collect their cheques at the end of the night following their big win in the first annual High River Rotary Club Lip Sync Battle.

Gale says he was surprised with the win, considering some of his group had to cancel last minute, forcing him to recruit out of the audience for help.

"We thought, well, you know what? Let's just get the crowd involved. So we asked somebody from the crowd to come in and be our drummer and asked a few more people if they'd come and blow some air through our hair. Because we're a rock band! We did a little Sloan and we wanted to make it look like a real rock show. And the only way you can do that is by having air blown through your hair. So we gave them leaf blowers and had a lot of fun with it."

Bustard, actually made a couple of appearances on stage during the night.

"We were kind of filling in. We had another band that needed to cancel last minute and we wanted to make sure the show went on. So, I filled in. We have a lot of fun doing this. We do this for our company. We do it helping to raise money. So, yeah, we love doing this kind of stuff."

A few hundred people turned up for the event which saw 10 acts compete.

Rotary Club Welcomes New Executive Committee

2019/2020 Executives: Secretary Linda Holmes, new President Ev Doherty, Treasurer Carol Lyall, Vice President John Andresen, Director Bob Cole, Past President Paul Tarrant and President Elect Damian Boyle.

The High River Rotary Club is sporting some fresh faces in their leadership circle. The club chooses to cycle through their leadership roles every year. According to new President Elect Damian Boyle, this is a good way to keep the traditional way of doing business alive, while providing new ideas. "Last year I got elected to be Vice President, so I did that for a year and this year I become the President Elect. Next year I'll become the President and the year following that I'll become the Past President." Boyle explains "What that does is allow each club to maintain a continuity within the organization, so you never really lose direction of the ship." Boyle, who's only been with the club one year, says he's looking forward to the role change and in getting to experience different responsibilities this year. "There's a lot of tasks that the Rotary Club does that need organization. So the Vice President, the President Elect and the past President help to put those structures in place, helping the Club President who typically confine themselves to the leadership and administration of the Club." Boyle says it's this process that allows them to think out of the box. "I think every time you have new membership and new direction of the club, you'll see different flavours being brought into how we do business." The Flag program is one of those fundraisers that came about with a change in leadership and now the Rotary Club is planning a lip sync battle fundraiser to take place in the fall. Boyle says it's only members that get to vote, but anyone can join the club. "It's a whole different game - the Rotary Club, nothing we do is for ourselves, we do everything for people who need it. Local people and people around the world." Boyle says "That to me is very, very important, so if there's anyone with a desire to get involved in the community, and who wants to have some fun along to way, they should contact us. It's well worth the time."

Lobster Boil
Posted on Jun 12, 2019

Written by Morgan Patterson

The Rotary Club of High River had a very successful lobster boil fundraiser Saturday, June 1. High River Rotarian Ev Doherty says the annual fundraiser brings in a ton of money for the club, which stays here and goes into community initiatives. "The lobster boil brought in around $20,000 for our different projects. Locally we do the Handi-bus, youth programs and some exchange programs and it also supports our programs nationally as well, so it was a very good event. We can't say enough about the people that support us." Doherty says "The nice thing about it, is that everyone supports us and in a way they know it comes back through to the community either way." In total the Rotary Club cooked up 280 lobsters and served 360 meals. On the menu was lobster, prime rib or a mix of both. Doherty says it was great to see supporters were there having a good time, great food and everyone was just friendly. "There was lots of camaradery which was really nice to see." Doherty says they added a new strategy to raise funds this year. They auctioned off the privilege of being the first table served. "This year we had people bidding on the first table to eat, the owner of CDM in High River, He actually spent $1,400 just to have the first meal." The night wasn't all about the dollars raised, as the Rotary Club also presented High River's Mayor, Craig Snodgrass with the prestigious Paul Harris Award. .

RCHR Shredding For The Legion
Posted on Jun 11, 2019
On Saturday 25 May Grant Curtis and his team set up a high-capacity paper shredding operation in the Co-Op parking lot.  Donations were accepted towards the Royal Canadian Legion's building fund, and due to a massive turnout of paper-hoarders, as well as free hot dogs, the club was able to raise $1600.  Thanks to all of the RCHR and RCL volunteers who showed that morning.
Little Britches 60th
Posted on May 26, 2019
Some Rotarians braved the snow on 18 May to make sure that the Little Britches went off without any hitches.  Hank and his dedicated volunteers were up at the crack of dawn to race around town in electric carts and glow vests, blocking thoroughfares and ensuring the annual wrath of the six residents of downtown who work on Saturdays.  The parade was (reputedly) graced by the presence of District Governor Dan, who wisely chose not to risk his health by venturing outside his RV.  Preceding Dan in the parade were the soggy students of the District Rotary Youth Exchange pushing the District float, who expressed their gratitude to Dan for not falling asleep at the wheel and running them over.  Luckily the only casualty of the day was the Rotary tent, which broke a leg, probably due to old age aggravated by teenage abuse, something very familiar to Billy MacKillop.

RCHR Rotarians Honoured
Two of are very own have recently been recognized by the community for the great work they do.

Hank Leeferink was surprised on May 9th to discover that he was the very first Sun Country's Hometown Hero (pictured below with a few people who came for free doughnuts).

Also recently honoured as High River's Senior Volunteer of the Year was...no surprise...Ted Dawson (pictured below estimating how many more light bulbs it will take for the glow from George Lane Park to be seen from space)

The Rotary Club of High River is proud to congratulate both our very well-deserving members.
